The present paper analyses the topic of scientific discovery and the problem of the existence of a logical framework involved in such endeavour. We inquire how several non-monotonic logic frameworks and other formalisms can account for such a task. In the same vein, we analyse some key aspects of the historical and theoretical debate surrounding scientific discovery, in particular, the context of discovery and context of justification context distinction. We introduce the property “F-linked” of subsets of posets for a given free filter F on the natural numbers, and define the properties “μ-F-linked” and “θ-F-Knaster” for posets in a natural way. We show that θ-F-Knaster posets preserve strong types of unbounded families and of maximal almost disjoint families. Concerning iterations of such posets, we develop a general technique to construct θ-Fr-Knaster posets (where Fr is the Frechet ideal) via matrix iterations of <θ-ultrafilter-linked posets (restricted to some level of the (...) matrix). This is applied to prove consistency results about Cichoń's diagram (without using large cardinals) and to prove the consistency of the fact that, for each Yorioka ideal, the four cardinal invariants associated with it are pairwise different. At the end, we show that three strongly compact cardinals are enough to force that Cichoń's diagram can be separated into 10 different values. (shrink)

Desmontando el diálogo en una serie progresiva de planos, el escrito hace el ensayo de situar el Ion en la caverna de la Política platónica, para fecundar sus carencias juveniles con el principio de totalización del pensamiento político, es decir, con la construcción «poética» de un espacio que regule la reflexión y que en Platón se llama polis. En contrapartida, ello nos exige leer la Política platónica como obra de arte que propone, en y por la posibilidad que abre, un (...) nuevo tipo de poesía, la poesía filosófica, que a diferencia de la tradicional y vigente en su tiempo, no narra hechos sino que los crea. La síntesis de ese doble movimiento nos conduce a sugerir tres fugas de la violencia circular: una, la teoría de la inspiración del Ion prefigura la ausencia de mito que se presenta cuando, en el Sofista, Platón invierte el platonismo; dos, la poesía es la extraña producción que no lleva «algo» del no-ser al ser; y tres, la poética es la totalidad proteica que inscribe -en el pensamiento- lo que bulle cuando la poesía ya no es tal género y todavía no es tal otro. Finalmente, la tercera parte, al amparo de aquellas obras, y otros escudos de la palabra, denuncia la inventiva moderna en materia de ultrajes al adversario y supresión del cadáver y del duelo. Partiendo de algunos estudios filológicos contemporáneos sobre el significado del nombre rapsoda, que recogen las interpretaciones más antiguas del mismo y llegan a vincularlo con el ardid, la trama y la artimaña, intentamos derivar la concepción de la poesía que Homero materializa en la Ilíada, lo que exige entonces decidir si el rapsoda es el aedo compositor o sólo el recitador de la obra consumada. Y el sentido de su acto de coser cantos o cantar con un cayado depende, a (...) su vez, de si la transmisión oral del poema equivale o no a la inexistencia de la composición escrita, y de si ésta es simple redacción y conservación o, antes bien, partitura esencial de la poesía. La presente conferencia se refiere a estos antecedentes. En la primera parte; sobre el relato de Duras El square (1956) y el ensayo de Blanchot que lo medita, El dolor del diálogo, indica la relación "ética" entre la conversación y la desgracia. La segunda parte, entre otros, (...) caracteriza el tiempo en que se da la rareza de la conversación, así como las experiencias que permiten al pensamiento no anteponerse a la desgracia pero tampoco abandonarse a la ausencia de pensamiento. La tercera parte lee los escritos Lo indestructible, La relación del tercer género, etcétera, para caracterizar los diferentes "niveles" de la desgracia en dirección a la posibilidad o a la imposibilidad de conversar. La cuarta y última parte vuelve sobre la primera con el propósito de precisar la comunidad de los que no tienen nada en común salvo su separación -diferente en cada uno- del mundo: la comunidad de la desgracia. Melatonin is a hormone with complex roles in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders. Over the years, it has become clear that melatonin may exacerbate some autoimmune conditions, whereas it alleviates others such as multiple sclerosis. Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disorder characterized by a dysregulated immune response directed against the central nervous system. Indeed, the balance between pathogenic CD4+ T cells secreting IFN‐γ (TH1) or IL‐17 (TH17); and FoxP3+ regulatory T cells and IL‐10+ type 1 regulatory T cells (Tr1 cells) (...) is thought to play an important role in disease activity. Recent evidence suggests that melatonin ameliorates multiple sclerosis by controlling the balance between effector and regulatory cells, suggesting that melatonin‐triggered signaling pathways are potential targets for therapeutic intervention. Here, we review the available data on the effects of melatonin on immune processes relevant for MS and discuss its therapeutic potential. (shrink)

One of the most significant natural phenomena in the evolution of living beings occurs when a certain number of like individuals construct a new collective individuality. The ideal conditions for this arise when the probability of collective survival is greater than that of individual survival in interaction with environmental uncertainty. In this article, we propose a mechanism whereby a local fluctuation between individuals may have a global impact in creating an innovation that can prove favorable or detrimental to collective survival. This latter case is a situation in which the likelihood of a critical number of influential individuals of a coincident truth falls much more rapidly than a coincident untruth as the number of individual adherents to such unanimities rises. We term this phenomenon the collective misunderstanding syndrome, and it may explain rare collective behaviors such as the so-called ant mills. (shrink)

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships between perceived co-worker support, commitment to colleagues, job satisfaction, intention to help others, and pro-environmental behavior with the emphasis on eco-helping, with a view to determining the extent to which peer relationships encourage employees to engage in pro-environmental behaviors at work. This paper is framed by adopting social exchange theory through the lens of ethics of care. Data from a sample of 449 employees showed that receiving support from peers triggers (...) an exchange process that encourages eco-helping among colleagues. The implications of the findings are discussed in the light of the social exchange literature. (shrink)

El objetivo de este artículo es discutir la concepción cartesiana del Álgebra como una lógica del descubrimiento científico. En la introducción al artículo discutimos algunas de las interpretaciones más conocidas sobre el valor de la Matemática cartesiana. En la primera parte de este trabajo, realizamos una contraposición entre los pensamientos de Aristóteles y de Descartes sobre las teorías deductivas. En la segunda parte, analizamos las consideraciones hechas por Descartes sobre el valor de la Lógica. Este artigo tem por objetivo expor algumas ideias para elaborar uma perspectiva teórica sobre a negaçáo que permita comparar as abordagens dos filósofos, lógicos e linguistas sobre esse tema. Na introduçáo sáo apresentadas algumas das questões discutidas sobre a negaçáo. Na primeira parte é feita a distinçáo entre frase, enunciado e proposiçáo. Essa análise nos permitirá por um lado diferenciar entidades linguísticas (frases, enunciados) de entidades lógicas (proposições), e pelo outro separar três planos na abordagem das questões sobre a negaçáo: (...) o plano do código linguístico, o do uso do código linguístico ou plano da enunciaçáo, e o plano da lógica. Na segunda parte distinguimos entre os conceitos de oposiçáo, de negaçáo e de expressáo intrínsecamente negativa. Na terceira parte abordamos a teoria fregeana da negaçáo a partir das distinções feitas anteriormente. Na quarta parte discutimos as concepções de Platáo e de Aristóteles sobre a negaçáo. Na quinta parte distinguimos entre a negaçáo de um enunciado, a negaçáo de uma componente de enunciado, a negaçáo proposicional e a negaçáo predicativa. Na sexta parte discutimos a questáo de se haveria um ato ilocucionário de negar oposto ao ato de afirmar. Na última parte apresentamos nossas conclusões. (shrink)

O objetivo do presente artigo é discutir algumas das características da Filosofia da Matemática de Lakatos. Na primeira parte do artigo, o pensamento de Lakatos sobre a Matemática é situado dentro do quadro geral da Filosofia da Matemática do século XX. Na segunda parte, é discutida a interpretação oferecida por Lakatos do método de análise e síntese na Geometria e na Filosofia Moderna. Essa interpretação é comparada com outras interpretações desse mesmo método. El escrito Lo imposible de presenciar ofrece una interpretación del nocturno de Paul Celan Du liegst por parte de un lector que no se presupone destinatario del poema. En consecuencia, el primer momento de la lectura sigue el consejo del propio poeta de alejar la pretensión de creer que el sentido de una palabra consiste en el significado que conocemos de ella. El segundo momento busca las coordenadas del sentido en la puntuación del poema, y su estratificación, en la rima, (...) para penetrar en lo desconocido de la palabra por medio de una música desconocida. El ensayo se presenta como una descripción de la interpretación genealógica en su articulación inmanente, tiene que vérselas en el fondo con la cuestión de por qué los modernos representantes de aquel sistema de interpretación son sus pretendidos antagonistas en tanto renuncian a interpretar. Although it has been recognized that employees regularly engage in non-green behaviors, little research has been conducted to explain how these behaviors may be avoided. Using data from a three-wave study, this study tested a moderated-mediation model in which trust in the immediate manager was expected to increase the indirect effect of supervisory support for the environment on non-green behaviors through employee environmental commitment. While the findings showed, as predicted, that exchange relationships with the immediate manager reduce the tendency of (...) employees to engage in non-green behaviors, the indirect effect of supervisory support on non-green behaviors through employee environmental commitment was moderated at a low level of trust in the manager, contrary to predictions. Though unexpected, this result seems less surprising when discussed in the light of negotiated exchange, suggesting that employee efforts to avoid non-green behaviors need to be seen as the result of a deal between managers and subordinates. The findings of this study contribute to the emerging literature on social exchange in an environmental context and have implications for organizations seeking to achieve environmental sustainability. This study draws on deontic justice theory to examine an unexplored socioemotional micro-foundation of corporate social responsibility (CSR), namely anticipated guilt, in an effort to improve our understanding of employees’ moral reactions to their organization’s CSR. We empirically investigate whether environmental CSR induces anticipated guilt (i.e., concerns about future guilt for not contributing to organizational CSR) leading to organizational environmental citizenship behavior. We also consider two boundary conditions related to the social nature of anticipated guilt: line manager support for the (...) environment and negative environmental group norms. To test our hypotheses, we analyzed data from a convenience sample of 503 managers working in Mexican organizations, using Latent Moderated Structural equation modeling. Overall, our results support the deontic argument that employees care about CSR because CSR embodies moral concerns. Specifically, our findings show that efforts to avoid a guilty conscience increase when the line manager provides increased resources and control to act for the environment, and when group members do not care for the environment, suggesting that employees feel they have to compensate for their group’s moral failure. The aim of this paper is to analyse and to discuss the philosophical reflexions on Geometry due to Blaise Pascal, Antoine Arnauld and Pierre Nicole. All of them were linked to the Jansenism, religious movement whose centre was at the Port Royal abbey. Our theses is that their philosophical thoughts on Geometry as well as their criticism of Euclid’s Elements were rooted not only in the works of the geometers and Element’s translators and commentators of the sixteenth century but also (...) on their particular conceptions about human knowledge and soul. Our text is divided into five parts. In the first part we examine the place of Geometry in the culture of the seventeenth century. After that, in the second part, we discuss the standard criticism directed against Euclid’s Elements. In the third part we analyse three works of Pascal: The spirit of geometry, The art of persuasion and some fragments that have survived of a text entitled Introduction of Geometry. In the fourth part we discuss the critical remarks of the Logic of Port Royal on the geometrical works, especially on the Elements. The fifth part of our work is devoted to Arnauld’s reconstruction of plane elementary Geometry in his New Elements of Geometry. The conclusions are set forth in the sixth part. (shrink)

The present collection of translations arises from our work within Writing Urban Places, a network of researchers interested in the different ways citizens appropriate meaningful built environments through stories, and in doing so are also better able to integrate with others. A key locus in this respect is what our network has termed the ‘mid-sized’ [or ‘intermediate’] European city. Often afforded only cursory attention in the discussion of both culture and society, overlooked in favour of more usual suspects, such urban (...) places allow for a more de-centred, and on occasions regionally focused, view of urban practices, even as they play host to a significant element of contemporary European life and experience. The quest for meaningfulness and appropriation of the urban environment through co-creative, adaptive, and transformative processes (many of which have a textual quality) became central to the theoretical framework of this initiative. Between the individual places in which such processes could be observed and documented, we hypothesized, arises the problem of intermediation – the move from place to place, and its techniques. Translation, more than a textual practice among others, emerged as a structuring consideration of the project at a European scale. Other Destinations is the outcome of this collective process presented here, offering entry into this work to an English-language readership for the first time. We hope that, even as they bring their cities of origin somewhat closer to a new readership, those readers will be uprooted and moved some distance in the direction of these ‘other destinations.’ -/- The edited volume Other Destinations. Translating the Mid-sized European City thus features English translations of 15 21st century (mainly) literary texts published in different media (books, podcasts, journals, online/social media) originally written in languages other than English and that have not previously been translated into English. The selected texts cover the topic of mid-sized European cities, where mid-sized does not solely refer to the size in terms of geographical scope or the number of inhabitants, but also to their socio-historical context of urban identity where these cities are neither metropolises nor small towns, but “other”, lesser-known European cities. The texts selected to be translated in this edited volume cover cities like Volos, Canakkale, Varna, Plovdiv, Durres, Tirana, Porto, Den Haag, Osijek, Salzburg, Naples, Zrenjanin, Loule and others…. The publication intends to enhance the dissemination and accessibility to an international readership of texts about overlooked urban contexts, “other”, lesser-known European cities, their stories and signifying practices in order to develop a better awareness of these cities, their self-constructions, and their responses to the challenges of the present. En este artículo se presenta una revisión bibliográfica de la novela Terra nostra, de Carlos Fuentes, y propicia diálogos que evidencian su actualidad y su relación interdisciplinar con la filosofía, la historia, el arte, la sociedad y la cultura. En los criterios estructurales se distinguen estas temáticas: mito e identidad, relaciones con el otro, imagen y memoria, y la reconstrucción de lo que somos y seremos. Se tuvieron en cuenta franjas temporales de ocho años, desde el momento de su publicación, (...) 1975, hasta el año 2015. Los estudios destacan los problemas de la identidad latinoamericana, la intertextualidad, la multiculturalidad y la conquista; revelan su actualidad en el siglo XXI a través del mestizaje, las tradiciones culturales del Viejo y el Nuevo Mundo, y los otros mundos; y expresan, así, la necesidad de reconstruir un nuevo humanismo. The assembly of products or components by operators in industries is a complex task with recurring problems. In these processes, operators often make errors that can lead to defective products. Therefore, they need to be inspected later to verify their correct assembly. The main problems are caused by several reasons including high employee turnover, lack of experience in manufacturing specific products or confusion in interpreting instructions to assemble similar components. In this paper, a novel structured language aimed to describe the (...) required actions to manufacture a product in industrial assembly environments is presented. The main contribution is to provide a formal language to feed automatic systems that can verify through visual control whether the actions performed by the operator are carried out following the standard described by this language. In general, the use of this formal language will allow to minimize the negative impact of errors during assembly and to reduce waste in many forms in the industry. (shrink)

The organ donation and transplantation (ODT) system heavily relies on the willingness of individuals to donate their organs. While it is widely believed that public trust plays a crucial role in shaping donation rates, the empirical support for this assumption remains limited. In order to bridge this knowledge gap, this article takes a foundational approach by elucidating the concept of trust within the context of ODT. By examining the stakeholders involved, identifying influential factors, and mapping the intricate trust relationships among (...) trustors, trustees, and objects of trust, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of trust dynamics in ODT. We employ maps and graphs to illustrate the functioning of these trust relationships, enabling a visual representation of the complex interactions within the ODT system. Through this conceptual groundwork, we pave the way for future empirical research to investigate the link between trust and organ donation rates, informed by a clarified understanding of trust in ODT. This study can also provide valuable insights to inform interventions and policies aimed at enhancing organ donation rates. (shrink)

Service-dominant logic established that for the success of service industries, it is vital to acknowledge the customer as an active agent in the commercial ecosystem. To carry it out, the consumer must participate in value creation. The resource integration theory exposes the importance of recognizing the customer as an agent capable of improving the company’s competitive advantage. It is only necessary for the participants to perceive benefits to make their resources available and integrate them into the co-creation process. This study (...) aims to find the key customer-based factors that influence the brand value co-creation process in the banking sector, analyzing the dynamics in different customers across national cultures and idiosyncrasies. In this paper, we analyze the potential heterogeneous idiosyncrasy of customers and how it leads to becoming more engaged in the co-creation process. Quantitative research was performed in five countries, obtaining a total of 2,029 valid questionnaires where latent profile analyses and ANOVAs were performed to identify and describe the latent profiles of consumer co-creators of brand value. Afterward, a PLS-SEM was performed to test the research model in each segment. The results show four different profiles of customer co-creators of brand value, from non-co-creators, skeptical and neutral, to customers committed to co-creating brand value with their banks. The results indicate that detractor customers lack the motivations and resources to carry out co-creation behaviors. On the other hand, creativity and connectedness were crucial for customers co-creators of value. To the authors’ understanding, no studies have used latent segmentation to find the profiles of customer co-creators of brand value. (shrink)

Background Neuroscientific approaches have historically triggered changes in the conception of creativity and artistic experience, which can be revealed by noting the intersection of these fields of study in terms of variables such as global trends, methodologies, objects of study, or application of new technologies; however, these neuroscientific approaches are still often considered as disciplines detached from the arts and humanities. In this light, the question arises as to what evidence the history of neurotechnologies provides at the intersection of creativity (...) and aesthetic experience. Methods We conducted a century-long bibliometric analysis of key parameters in multidisciplinary studies published in the Scopus database. Screening techniques based on the PRISMA method and advanced data analysis techniques were applied to 3612 documents metadata from the years 1922 to 2022. We made graphical representations of the results applying algorithmic and clusterization processes to keywords and authors relationships. Results From the analyses, we found a) a shift from a personality-focus quantitative analysis to a field-focus qualitative approach, considering topics such as art, perception, aesthetics and beauty; b) The locus of interest in fMRI-supported neuroanatomy has been shifting toward EEG technologies and models based on machine learning and deep learning in recent years; c) four main clusters were identified in the study approaches: humanistic, creative, neuroaesthetic and medical; d) the neuroaesthetics cluster is the most central and relevant, mediating between creativity and neuroscience; e) neuroaesthetics and neuroethics are two of the neologism that better characterizes the challenges that this convergence of studies will have in the next years. Conclusions Through a longitudinal analysis, we evidenced the great influence that neuroscience is having on the thematic direction of the arts and humanities. The perspective presented shows how this field is being consolidated and helps to define it as a new opportunity of great potential for future researchers. (shrink)
